The short version

No analytics run on this site until you actively accept them. Before you choose, Google Analytics is not loaded and no analytics identifiers are set. If you reject, nothing is loaded and nothing is tracked, and the site works exactly the same.

One thing is stored either way: your choice itself, so we do not ask again on every page.

What is stored, and when

This records whether you accepted or rejected analytics. It is kept in your browser’s local storage rather than as a cookie sent to a server, so it never leaves your device. It is stored whichever option you pick, including reject, because remembering “no” is the only way to stop asking.

Local storage is not a cookie in the technical sense, but it is still information stored on your device, and the same rules about consent and transparency apply to it. That is why it is listed here.

It stays until you change your decision or clear your browser storage.

_ga and _ga_<id>, only if you accept

These are set by Google Analytics 4, provided by Google, to distinguish visitors and sessions so we can see aggregate patterns such as which pages get read, how people arrived, and which town or city they are browsing from. They are only ever set after you press Accept. If you reject, or ignore the banner, they are never created because the Google Analytics script is never requested.

Google documents the default lifetime of these as up to two years. The exact expiry is controlled by Google and by the configuration of our Analytics property, so if you need the precise current value, ask us and we will confirm it rather than state a figure here that could drift.

How the choice works

The site uses Google Consent Mode. Analytics storage is set to denied as the page loads, before any tag could run. If you accept, that default is switched to granted and the Google Analytics script is requested for the first time. It is never loaded speculatively in the background beforehand.

Changing your mind

Select “Cookie preferences” in the footer of any page to reopen the banner and change your decision. It is available on every page of this site, and switching from accept to reject stops analytics from loading on your next page view.
